Maple Leafs’ William Nylander listed as late scratch vs. Sabres

Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander is officially out for Saturday’s game against the Buffalo Sabres. Nylander participated in the warm-up per usual, but was ruled out of the game shortly before the puck dropped.

After taking warmups, William Nylander is not in the lineup.

William Nylander and Morgan Rielly (game-time decisions) are both on the ice for Leafs’ warmup.

“If he’s able to go, he’ll play. We’ll see how he feels coming in here today,” Berube said, speaking about Nylander at pre-game media on Saturday afternoon

Nylander exited Friday night’s contest against the Sabres with an unspecified injury. It doesn’t appear to be anything too serious, considering how close he came to playing today, but in the end it looks like the team decided to err on the side of caution. The 29-year-old currently sits second in the league in points with 14 on the year so far, including three goals and 11 assists.

Nylander’s absence certainly throws a wrench in the team’s offensive lines. Nick Robertson is back in the lineup and he’s slotted in on the top line alongside Auston Matthews and Bobby McMann. Nylander joins Chris Tanev, Scott Laughton, and Joseph Woll as players currently sidelined, with Dakota Mermis and Anthony Stolarz sitting out today as healthy scratches. Dennis Hildeby was called up from the AHL’s Toronto Marlies earlier to back-up Cayden Primeau, giving Stolarz a day off after a busy few weeks.

Defenceman Morgan Rielly was also considered a game-time decision, but ended up slotting into the lineup, after he was sidelined one game due to injury. He’ll look to keep building on his solid offensive start to the year with six points in seven games, including two goals.

After Friday’s 5-3 loss to the Sabres, the Maple Leafs are now in the midst of a three-game skid, with a 3-4-1 record on the year so far. They’ll look to break that on Saturday afternoon, now back home at Scotiabank Arena.
