The Dallas Cowboys didn’t do anything on Monday, but something happened around the NFL that they likely took notice of.
Early in the morning the Seattle Seahawks gave wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba a new deal that averages $42.15M per year. Previously the top of the market in this sense belonged to Ja’Marr Chase of the Cincinnati Bengals slightly north of $40M per year. The NFL now has two wide receivers who have broken the $40M mark.
It stands to reason that Puka Nacua will get there in due time. We can argue about where George Pickens falls in rank relative to those wide receivers, but the market is moving and that is the overall point here.
If the Cowboys want to ride out the franchise tag for Pickens in 2026 then there is certainly merit to that idea. He is on the books for under $28M at the moment and if you do believe he is among the rank of the other players mentioned then you can see how this would be viewed as a bargain.
Obviously there is also merit to getting a long-term deal done with Pickens, and if the Cowboys have intentions of doing that then we all know that the sooner they are able to do this the better.
