Devon Levi was once seen as a top goaltending prospect in the NHL, but after a rough start to his career, he’s now seemingly requested a trade from Buffalo.

Originally selected in the seventh round of the 2020 NHL Draft by the Florida Panthers, Devon Levi became a top prospect of the Buffalo Sabres, with the team believing that they’d found their goaltender of the future.

At Northeastern University, Levi was lights out, bringing that production to the Rochester Americans in the AHL, but since then, he’s struggled to take that final leap to the NHL.

Now, the 23-year old has seemingly settled in as the Sabres third best goaltender behind Alex Lyon and Ukko Pekka-Luukkonen, and that’s led to a major career decision.

Devon Levi Reportedly Requests A Trade From Buffalo

According to former NHLer Craig Rivet on the After the Whistle podcast, Levi officially requested a trade before he was demoted to the AHL following the return of UPL after his early season absence.

While it’s not been confirmed by player or team, this would make sense from Levi’s perspective, as he believes he’s ready to compete in the NHL on a nightly basis, but with two veterans ahead of him, the Sabres simply don’t have room for him anymore.

In 39 NHL games for the Sabres thus far, Levi hasn’t been perfect but he’s shown flashes, posting a 3.29 GAA and an .894 save percentage, with the Sabres clearly hoping to see more from him.

Ultimately, it would make sense for Levi to seek a trade given his situation, and while we don’t know the Sabres thought process here, if they get an offer that’s too good to turn down, don’t be shocked to see him moved at some point this season.
